What is one thing you wish you knew about college before you started as a student?

Overall, while I felt I planned well as a college student, I also played it 鈥渟afe.鈥 If I could go back in time I would do more of the following: Take more risks. Don't make fear-based decisions to avoid failure. Build exploration into your plan. Don't compare your journey with others. Seek out and take advantage of mentors; as many as appropriate with respect to your goals. Not just mentorship from your instructors, but from staff advisors/counselors, people in the industry you wish to be a part of in your professional work. Learn from them about resources, opportunities and their own personal journey of overcoming struggle vs. avoiding struggle. Build a support team for yourself and network as much as possible.

What do you like to do when you're not working?

I nourish my soul by going on nature walks or hikes, quality time with family & friends, prayer, listening to sermons, reading, talking, making my baby laugh, learning something new I didn't know before, exploring new places and trying new yummy cuisine.

Biography:

I immigrated from the Philippines when I was 6.5 years hold. Having to navigate a new country, a new culture and educational system taught me early on, there is plenty that I don't know and need help to understand. The importance of seeking help from counselors, advisors and instructors served as a necessary compass to guide me in my journey. As an adult, my faith and life experiences have taught me it is better to be in a position of humility andseek wisdom to learn and to grow in all aspects of my life.

My goal is to do my best to relate to and serve others from this position. Humility allows us to acknowledge our needs, and the needs of others. I'm a fan of the film Avatar and found this excerpt by Eric Duncan that beautifully captures all of the possibilities that become available when we choose humility.

鈥淭oday, I want to focus specifically on a scene at the beginning of the movie.  Jake has just recently been 鈥渂orn again鈥 (gotten into his avatar), but he's very clumsy living in this new body, and so triggers a bunch of dangers through being a spiritual 鈥渂aby鈥.  Coming to the Omaticaya, he asks to learn their ways.

At this point, the Omaticaya leader makes a comment that I think is so necessary for us to learn from: 鈥淥thers have tried to learn and failed.  You cannot fill a cup that is already full.鈥  To which Jake responds 鈥淢y cup is empty.鈥

This is fundamental for us to grow.鈥

I have intentionally written a non-traditional biography because I realized that all of the trials, accomplishments, degrees, milestones, positions and roles I've served and continue to serve in, ultimately does not define who I am. My cup remains empty. I remain hungry and choosing a position of humility, so that my character can grow into maturity and completion of who I truly am.
