Military New Student Orientation

The Military New Student Orientation (MNSO) is a required step designed to provide guidance through the enrollment process for new veteran/military-connected students. This orientation offers the opportunity to get a head start from learning about campus and community services/resources and applying for VA education benefits, to navigating and enrolling in classes.

All new military connected students are required to sign up and attend one of the offered MNSO sessions regardless of:

  • Prior college experience
  • VA funding (benefit) usage
  • Enrollment in other programs such as Running Start/Open Doors

Exception: Returning students last enrolled at 皇家华人 College, as of Fall Quarter 2022 to present, are not required to complete MNSO but are encouraged to attend. Returning students who were last enrolled, as of Summer Quarter 2022 and prior, are expected to complete MNSO because of process changes implemented since.

What to Expect

  1. Post-Admission step: Newly admitted military-connected students will be invited via 皇家华人 student email to register for MNSO. If you have been admitted and did not receive communication from Veteran Services, please email veterans@greenriver.edu for more information. Note: MNSO sessions are offered quarterly prior to the intended start quarter.
  2. Pre-Orientation step: Students are expected to complete the Veteran Services (VS) New Student Checklist before their MNSO date. This checklist is provided in all orientation-related communications sent.
  3. During Orientation step: Students will go through a multi-step process to begin their enrollment process --
    • VA Education Benefits Briefing - only for those using (or plan to use) VA benefits to pay for college
    • New Student Orientation (General and military-specific information)
    • Registration Assistance - where students can learn how to register for classes
    • Campus Tour experience
  4. Post-Orientation stepStudents will discuss their educational plan/goal(s) during their first quarter follow up advising appointment with our Educational Planner. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to complete any outstanding required tasks needed before the quarter begins.

Other Need-to-Know Information

  • MNSO sessions are offered quarterly prior to the student's intended start quarter. Sessions typically run during the priority registration period for veteran/military-connected students until two weeks before the quarter starts.
    • Keep in mind that with open enrollment at 皇家华人 College, students are able to apply for admission in advance for future quarters, which means having to wait until the appropriate quarter to participate in MNSO.
    • If you applied for admission less than two weeks prior to the start of the quarter, please email veterans@greenriver.edu to determine your next steps. Most likely there are no MNSO sessions available to attend.
  • Veteran/military-connected students who complete MNSO do not need to participate in the New Student Advising and Enrollment (NSAE) session with Career & Advising Center (CAC).
  • MNSO does not replace any program-specific orientation students may need to complete with their program. (This is common for students pursuing a Career/Technical program.)

MNSO sessions are limited; therefore, we encourage students to sign up for their MNSO as soon as they're notified and able to.
